Licence to import Equines into the Isle of Man from Great Britain


This Import Licence is valid from 04 May 2024 until 03 Jun 2024.


This form should be completed by the person importing the equines, "The Importer".

The Importer must:

  • be resident in the Isle of Man
  • supply an Isle of Man address for the Importer details
  • be the owner or part owner of the equine

If you supply an email address, on completion, a confirmation email will be sent with a copy of this form attached. The person transporting the equine must carry a printed copy with the equines in transit to the Isle of Man. 

If you do not supply an email address you must use the print option at the end of the form before you submit your form.

The vehicle details may be supplied later and must be the vehicle in which the equine is transported. If this is not your vehicle then you must request the details be completed, prior to loading, by the person transporting the equine for you.

Extracts from the Equine (Importation) Order 1973

  1. “Equine” means a horse, ass, mule (which includes hinny).
  2. This licence and all relevant documents and certificates must accompany the equines in transit to the Isle of Man, and be delivered immediately by the Captain of the Vessel or Aircraft, or his representative, to the Harbour/Airport Police Officer in charge at the Port or Airport of entry for submission as soon as possible to the Agriculture Directorate.
  3. An equine may be liable to detention at the Government Lairs or other place if found by an Inspector of the Department, to be suffering from any contagious or infectious disease, or is suspected to have been in contact with any animals suffering from such disease.
  4. An equine will be liable to detention at the Government Lairs or any other place if an outbreak of disease has occurred in or near the district from which the equine has been brought whilst the equine is in transit.

Conditions of Licence

  1. Equines may travel to the Isle of Man in a horsebox with other equines from different UK holdings and may be delivered to different Isle of Man destinations. The equines  must then be isolated from Foot and Mouth susceptible stock for a period of 5 days.
  2. If an equine is collected in a livestock lorry with other cattle and/or sheep from the same UK holding (and the equine has been resident at the same UK holding for a period of 21 days prior to export) then the horse may be delivered to a different Isle of Man destination. Again, the equines must be isolated from Foot and Mouth susceptible stock for a period of 5 days and remain there for a further 16 days.
  3. If a equine is collected in a livestock lorry with other cattle and/or sheep from a different UK holding than the cattle and/or sheep then on importation to the Isle of Man, the equine must reside at the cattle/sheep holding for a period of 21 days, after which time it may move.
  4. Equines which are not fully vaccinated against Equine Influenza must be kept isolated from other equines for 14 days following importation. 

Horseboxes

  1. The horse box shall be cleaned and disinfected immediately prior to loading. Disinfection shall be with a disinfectant approved for Foot and Mouth Disease by DEFRA.
