The Clinical Recommendations Committee (CRC) makes recommendations to the Department of Health and Social Care on the priority for funding that should be given to the interventions considered by it. When DHSC has considered the CRC recommendation and, if appropriate, requested and considered a business case to deliver the intervention, and identified appropriate funding, a policy statement setting out the DHSC decision and criteria for funding (if appropriate) is issued.

The CRC identifies topics for consideration by a variety of methods including horizon scanning, reviewing forward publication schedules of the National Institute of Health and Clinical Excellence and other relevant bodies. In addition, clinicians delivering care to Isle of Man patients may submit requests for consideration using this proforma. Please note that submission of a request for policy consideration does not guarantee that it will be agreed for addition to the CRC work programme. Submission of a request for policy consideration does not constitute interim agreement to funding and the intervention will remain not routinely funded until a funding decision is confirmed by DHSC. Where a clinician considers a patient to have exceptional need or capacity to benefit from the intervention compared to other patients in the same clinical cohort, funding may be requested through the Individual Funding Process change by completing IFRP - Treatment Request Form.

For the purposes of the CRC, a topic or intervention includes:

  • medicinal products (drugs)
  • medical devices
  • diagnostic techniques
  • surgical procedures or other therapeutic techniques
  • therapeutic technologies other than medicinal products
  • systems of care
